Don’t Get Burned by the Sun!

Recently I posted a video about self care of minor skin burns, with an eye towards the upcoming 4th of July holiday. Today I want to discuss a much more prevalent type of burn - sun burn. The best approach to sun burn is, of course, prevention!

The most successful prevention is sun avoidance during peak hours, generally 10am - 4pm. This generally proves difficult for most people - we have pool parties, backyard cookouts, soccer games, baseball tournaments, picnics, beach time etc! So when going outside in the sun is unavoidable, the next best prevention is sun screen. Whether you are using a spray or a cream or a stick, just be sure to choose a high SPF (>30), broad spectrum, apply liberally, and REAPPLY every 2 hours or sooner if getting wet/sweaty.

If you can’t stand sunscreen, struggle to apply it well, or want to do even more to limit your sun exposure, then also wear sun protective clothing. There are many available SPF shirts and pants, as well as wide brimmed hats to shield your face and scalp. If you can intermittently find some shade during your time outside, even better!

If you still get a sun burn despite your best efforts, manage with a cooling and soothing topical lotion like aloe. Motrin or Tylenol can help with pain. If there are blisters, do not pop them as this increases risk for infection. Take some extra precautions until your skin heals, like check out a summer blockbuster rather than another day at the pool!
